What is the Kailash Inner Kora Tour by Road?
The Kailash Inner Kora is a sacred circuit around Mount Kailash, believed to be the spiritual center of the universe by Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and Bonpo followers. The Inner Kora is a path that takes pilgrims closer to the mountain, requiring more effort and determination compared to the Outer Kora, but offering a deeper spiritual connection. The journey is done via overland travel, including driving through Tibet and trekking sections.
What makes the Kailash Inner Kora different from the Outer Kora?
Outer Kora: A standard route for most pilgrims, it’s a relatively easier trek around Kailash, requiring 3 days of trekking at an altitude of up to 5,600 meters (18,400 feet).
Inner Kora: A more challenging route that takes you closer to the base of Kailash. It’s shorter in distance but much more rugged and difficult, involving steep ascents and descents. It's typically only undertaken by experienced trekkers seeking a deeper spiritual experience.
How long does the Kailash Inner Kora Tour by Road take?
The trip generally takes about 12 to 14 days. This includes the overland journey to Kailash from Nepal (or Lhasa), trekking around Kailash, and visiting other sacred sites in the region.
Is the Kailash Inner Kora accessible by road?
Yes, the journey begins with an overland drive from Nepal or Lhasa to Kailash. The Inner Kora itself involves trekking around Mount Kailash. The overland journey to reach the starting point of the Kora (often Darchen) is done by jeep or bus on rugged Tibetan roads, while the Kora involves walking.
How difficult is the Kailash Inner Kora?
The Inner Kora is considered more difficult than the Outer Kora due to its steep terrain, higher altitudes, and rugged paths. Some sections are more physically demanding, requiring good fitness and stamina. The altitude can also cause altitude sickness, so proper acclimatization is essential. The trek itself may take 3 to 4 days, depending on the pace.
Do I need special permits for the Kailash Inner Kora Tour?
Yes, you will need special permits to visit Tibet (including Mount Kailash), as well as a Tibet Travel Permit for the journey. For Nepalese pilgrims, a Chinese visa is also required for entry into Tibet. These permits are usually arranged by the tour operator.
What kind of accommodation is available during the trip?
Accommodation during the Kailash Inner Kora journey is quite basic. You'll find guesthouses and simple lodges in towns like Darchen (the starting point of the Kora). During the Kora itself, accommodation will typically be in basic lodges or campsites with shared facilities. Expect basic amenities and be prepared for rugged conditions.
What kind of transportation is used?
The overland travel to Mount Kailash is typically by jeeps or buses, depending on the group size and the route taken. The roads can be rough, and the drive will take you through remote areas of Tibet. For the Kora, you'll primarily be walking, though some groups may use yaks or horses for part of the journey.
Is the Kailash Inner Kora Tour safe?
The Kailash Inner Kora involves challenges like high-altitude trekking and rugged terrain, so safety depends on proper preparation and having a good tour guide. Altitude sickness is a common concern, so adequate acclimatization and the use of experienced guides are crucial. Ensure you're in good physical condition and travel with a reputable operator.
How should I prepare for the Kailash Inner Kora Tour?
Physical Preparation: Engage in regular physical exercise, including cardio and strength training. Trekkers should also practice hiking at high altitudes.
Acclimatization: Spend a few days at high altitudes to adjust before starting the trek. You can plan to stay in places like Tingri or Shigatse for acclimatization before heading to Mount Kailash.
Pack Accordingly: Bring appropriate clothing for cold, high-altitude conditions. Sturdy hiking boots, warm layers, and a good sleeping bag are essential.
Mental Preparation: Be ready for a physically demanding journey. The Inner Kora is more strenuous than the standard Kora, requiring perseverance and a positive mindset.
What’s the best time to go for the Kailash Inner Kora?
The best time is between May and September when the weather is relatively mild, and roads are accessible. Winter months can be harsh, with snow and freezing temperatures, making the journey difficult and dangerous.

Many believe that completing the Inner Kora brings immense spiritual rewards. It’s seen as a deeply transformative experience that helps with purification, self-realization, and attaining moksha (liberation from the cycle of birth and rebirth). Pilgrims believe that circumambulating Kailash on the Inner Kora can wash away sins and bring blessings from the divine.
