Significance of Kailash Mansarovar - Nepal Tourism

A large number of studies conducted by the scientists of Russia and America believe that the holy peak is located at the center of the world and is therefore known as the axis Mundi. It is also said to be connected to several other monuments across the globe, such as the Stonehenge, which is exactly 6666 km away from here, the North Pole is also 6666 km from here and the South Pole is 13332 km (2 times 6666 km) away from the peak.

The four faces of Mount Kailash face the four directions of the compass. Some of the Russian scientists who studied Mt. Kailash for a long time believed that Mount Kailash is not a mountain as it is way too perfect and symmetrical to be considered as a natural occurrence. The entire peak has a striking resemblance to a cathedral and the sides are extremely perpendicular which gives it the appearance of a pyramid. If seen very carefully, one can see human statue-like structures on the side of the mountain.

Religious reasons:

It is a religious destination for three major religions of the world, i.e., Hinduism, Jainism, and Buddhism. According to Hindu beliefs, Mount Kailash is believed to be the holy abode of Lord Shiva, he is said to be in eternal meditation. The place is also considered to be the abode of Buddha by the Buddhists and the followers of Jainism believe that this is the place from where Rishabh, the propagator of the religion, attained enlightenment.

As narrated in the sacred ancient linguistics, it is narrated “no mortal shall be allowed to walk atop Mount Kailash, where among the clouds is the home of the gods. He who dares to start to the top of the mount to see the faces of the gods will be put to death.” In the Vedas (sacred Hindu scriptures) the Mount Kailash is described as the world tree in the Vedas and it is even mentioned in the Mahabharata as well where the Pandavas (the 5 brothers) along with Draupadi are believed to have attained moksha whilst trekking up the peak, with one of them falling off before reaching the summit.

It is narrated in the Vedas, the mountain is a link between heaven and earth. The followers of Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism believe that the peak is the gateway to heaven (a path to attain the moksha.

When the sun is setting, the mountain is said to cast a shadow, which has a striking resemblance to the religious symbol of Swastika, which is considered as an auspicious sign amongst the Hindus. Om Parvat is yet another unsolved mystery which is fascinating, as the snow falls on the peak and takes the shape of OM.

Mystical Phenomena:

It has been observed by many who have visited the place that they have experienced sudden unexplained growth of the nails and hair. The proportion of growth of nails and hair in 12-hour duration at Mount Kailash is similar to the growth rate during 2–3 weeks in other parts of the world.

Even the world’s most famous mountain trekkers documented that they experienced strange sightings and often start moving in the opposite direction or would witness sudden changes in weather conditions which forces them to descend, many of who have never returned. All the treks to the summits have been unsuccessful until now.

Lakes of Mount Kailash:

There are two lakes located at the base of Mt Kailash which are known as the Manasarovar lake and the Rakshas Tal. These lakes are separated by a thin isthmus but are completely opposite when it comes to the nature of the two lakes.

1.     Lake Manasarovar is round-shaped which resembles the sun while the Rakshas Tal has the shape of a crescent moon.

2.     Lake Manasarovar is a freshwater lake while the Rakshas Tal is a saltwater lake.

3.     At the height of around 15000 ft above the MSL, these are the highest freshwater lake and saltwater lakes in the world.

4.     Lake Mansarovar supports a great variety of life while the Rakshas Tal supports no life.

5.     The water of the holy Lake Mansarovar stays placid (calm) even during windy conditions. On the contrary, Rakshas Tal stays more or less turbulent during all times irrespective of weather conditions.

The two lakes represent the good and negative energies respectively. Hindu pilgrims worship Lake Mansarovar. Lake Mansarovar has a deep spiritual significance while its antithesis, Rakshas Tal, was born of the intense austerities performed by the demon King Ravana to please Lord Shiva. For its close association with a demoniac entity, the Rakshas Tal Lake is endowed with salty water and deprived of aquatic plant life and marine life.

Folklore activities at Mount Kailash:

Climbing all the way up to the peak of Mount Kailash is considered to be a forbidden act among Hindus for the fear of trespassing the sanctity of the mountain and disturbing the divine energies residing there. As per Tibetan lore, a monk named Milarepa once ventured far enough to reach the top of Mount Kailash. When he returned, he forewarned everyone to avoid bothering God resting high up in the peak.

We do not claim the validity of the following claims but I have read somewhere that once a group of climbers of Siberian origin reached ahead of a certain point and immediately aged by a few decades. Shockingly, all of the trespassers died of old age a year after!

Summarizing all this I realized we should not overstep God’s creation and let nature play with its course and planned decisions.
