What is the Kailash Via Lhasa Ali Route?
This route begins in Lhasa, the spiritual and cultural heart of Tibet, and travels through Ali (also known as Ngari) to reach Mount Kailash. It is an overland route that passes through some of the most stunning and remote landscapes in the world.
What are the main entry points into Tibet?
For travelers starting from Lhasa, the main entry point is via Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR), typically through Kathmandu, Nepal, or China (if coming from mainland China). Many pilgrims start from Lhasa because it’s a major city with good infrastructure and spiritual significance.
What is the best time to travel?
The ideal time to travel to Kailash via this route is during the summer months (May to October). However, the best months are usually June to September, as the weather is more favorable and the route is more accessible.
How long does the entire journey take?
The journey typically takes 12-14 days, depending on the itinerary and how long you spend at each location (Lhasa, Ali, Kailash, etc.). The drive from Lhasa to Ali can take around 3-4 days.
What is the distance from Lhasa to Mount Kailash?
The distance from Lhasa to Mount Kailash is approximately 1,200 kilometers (750 miles), and the road journey can take 3-4 days. The trip is long and can be physically taxing due to the high altitudes.
What kind of physical preparation is needed?
Traveling in Tibet means dealing with high altitudes, which can be challenging. Some key points to consider:
Altitude sickness is a common issue, especially above 3,000 meters (9,800 feet). Lhasa itself is at 3,650 meters (11,975 feet).
It’s essential to acclimatize in Lhasa before heading to higher altitudes.
Make sure you're in good physical health before attempting the trek.
Is the route accessible by vehicle?
Yes, the route is mostly accessible by 4WD vehicles. However, the road conditions can be challenging due to the rugged terrain and weather conditions, especially in the rainy season.
What permits are required?
To travel in Tibet, you will need several permits:
Tibet Travel Permit: Required for any foreign traveler to enter Tibet.
Alien’s Travel Permit: Required for travel outside Lhasa, including to Kailash.
Kailash Pilgrimage Permit: Specific for traveling to Mount Kailash.
In some cases, a Chinese Visa may also be required if traveling from Nepal.
Are there any special challenges to consider?
The road from Lhasa to Ali is remote and not as well-maintained as those in other regions. The lack of infrastructure and sparse services can be a challenge.
Language barriers may exist, as many locals speak Tibetan, and English is not commonly spoken outside major tourist areas.
There are few accommodation options along the route, so it’s important to travel with an experienced guide.
What should I pack for the trip?
Warm clothing (even in summer, it can be cold, especially at high altitudes)
Sunscreen (the UV rays at high altitudes can be very strong)
High-quality walking shoes or boots
Medication for altitude sickness (consult your doctor before traveling)
Water purification system or iodine tablets (water sources can sometimes be unreliable)
Is the Kailash trek physically demanding?
Yes, the Kailash Kora (the circumambulation around Mount Kailash) is physically demanding. It involves walking at high altitudes (around 5,600 meters/18,370 feet) and steep terrain. It can be very challenging, even for seasoned trekkers, and is typically done in a 3-day trek.
Can I visit Mount Kailash without trekking?
Yes, it is possible to visit Mount Kailash without doing the Kora trek. You can travel by vehicle around the mountain, but many pilgrims choose to walk the Kora for spiritual reasons.
What are the accommodation options along the route?
Accommodation along the route is generally basic, with guesthouses and monasteries offering simple lodging. There are no luxurious hotels, and the facilities might not be as comfortable as what you would expect in more developed areas.
Are there any risks associated with this route?
The altitude poses the biggest risk. Many travelers suffer from altitude sickness if they don't acclimatize properly. There’s also the risk of road closures due to weather or other factors, so flexibility in your travel plans is important.
