What is Kailash Door Darshan?

Kailash Door Darshan is a trip that allows pilgrims and travelers to view Mount Kailash from a distance, without going for the full, physically demanding parikrama (circumambulation) around the mountain. It provides an opportunity for those who can't trek to still have a spiritual experience.

How do I get to Kailash Door Darshan?

Most travelers access Kailash Door Darshan via Nepal. The trip typically starts from Kathmandu, where you'll travel overland or by flight to Simikot in Nepal, then continue to Hilsa, which is on the border with Tibet (China). From Hilsa, you’ll proceed to Purang, the closest town to Mount Kailash.

Is a visa required for Kailash Door Darshan?

Yes, a Chinese visa is required for entering Tibet. You will need to arrange a group visa for Tibet, which is typically handled by travel agencies specializing in Kailash tours. You will also need an Indian visa if you are not an Indian citizen.

Can foreigners go for Kailash Door Darshan via Nepal?

Yes, foreigners can go for this pilgrimage, but they must have a Tibet travel permit and join a group tour since individual travel to Tibet is restricted.

What are the essential things to pack?

Some essentials include:

Warm clothing (it can get cold, especially at higher altitudes)

Comfortable shoes for walking

Medication (especially for altitude sickness)

What is the best time to visit Mount Kailash?

The best time to go is from May to October. The weather is relatively mild during these months, and the roads are more accessible. The peak pilgrimage season is typically during summer months when conditions are more favorable for travel.

What is the altitude of Mount Kailash and the surrounding area?

Mount Kailash itself is at an altitude of 6,638 meters (21,778 feet), but the Door Darshan route typically takes you to lower altitudes, around 3,500 to 4,000 meters (11,480 to 13,120 feet), depending on the specific viewing spots.

Do I need to be physically fit?

While Kailash Door Darshan does not require the strenuous activity of the full parikrama, it is still a high-altitude journey, and some level of physical fitness and stamina is recommended. Be prepared for some walking and extended travel times.

What are the costs associated with the trip?

The cost of the Kailash Door Darshan tour can vary depending on the operator, type of accommodations, and inclusions, but it generally ranges from $1,500 to $3,000 USD for the whole journey. This typically covers permits, transportation, accommodations, and some meals.

Can I stay in Tibet after visiting Mount Kailash?

No, most travelers on a Kailash tour have a time-limited Tibet permit, which requires them to return to Nepal or China within a specific period.
