What is the Adi Kailash Om Parvat Tour?
The Adi Kailash Om Parvat Tour is a pilgrimage to Adi Kailash, often referred to as the "Mini Kailash," located in the remote regions of the Kumaon Himalayas. This sacred site is believed to be a manifestation of Mount Kailash, and it is an important pilgrimage destination for Hindus. The tour also includes a visit to Om Parvat, where the natural formation of snow resembles the shape of the "Om" symbol.
The tour typically begins in Dharchula, a small town located in the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand, India. Dharchula is accessible by road and is the nearest town to the starting point of the trek to Adi Kailash.
The tour usually lasts 10-12 days, depending on the specific itinerary and the pace of the group. The journey includes travel to Dharchula, followed by a trek to Adi Kailash and Om Parvat, with time for rest and acclimatization.
The trek to Adi Kailash and Om Parvat is moderate in difficulty. It involves trekking at altitudes of around 4,000 meters (13,000 feet), so some physical fitness and preparation for altitude are recommended. The trek is manageable for most people, but it’s important to acclimatize properly to avoid altitude sickness.
While the trek is not extremely difficult, being in decent physical shape helps. You will be trekking for long hours over rough terrain, so good stamina, especially for walking on uneven paths and at higher altitudes, is important.
The ideal time to go on the Adi Kailash Om Parvat tour is between May and October, during the summer and early autumn months. The weather is relatively stable during this time, and the roads are more accessible, while the winter months can bring snow and harsh conditions.
Yes, a special permit is required to visit the Adi Kailash and Om Parvat areas as they lie in a border region close to Nepal. Your tour operator will typically arrange the necessary permits for you. You will also need identification documents such as a valid passport, a visa for India (if applicable), and any other documents requested by the authorities.
Yes, foreigners can participate in the Adi Kailash Om Parvat tour, but they must have the appropriate permits and must be part of a group tour. Individual foreign travelers are usually not permitted to visit the area without a tour group due to the sensitive border location.
Accommodation during the trek to Adi Kailash and Om Parvat generally consists of basic guesthouses, tents, or dharmshalas (simple rest houses). You may need to bring your own camping equipment depending on the tour operator. The facilities are quite basic due to the remote location, but the focus is on the spiritual experience.
Adi Kailash is located at an altitude of around 4,800 meters (15,750 feet), and Om Parvat is slightly lower, at around 4,600 meters (15,090 feet). The altitude can cause discomfort to some travelers, so it’s important to take adequate rest and stay hydrated during the journey.
The most important health precaution is to be mindful of altitude sickness. Symptoms include headaches, dizziness, nausea, and fatigue. If you feel any of these symptoms, it's essential to rest and acclimatize before continuing. Carry a first aid kit, and consult your doctor before the trip if you have any pre-existing conditions.
The cost of the tour typically ranges from ₹20,000 to ₹40,000 INR ($250 to $500 USD), depending on the tour operator, inclusions (transport, accommodation, meals, permits), and the length of the journey.
The tour often includes visits to other nearby sacred sites like Narayan Ashram (a remote Hindu ashram), Gauri Kund (a pilgrimage site), and Kailash Mansarovar (a sacred lake near Adi Kailash).
The Adi Kailash Om Parvat Tour usually requires travelers to join an organized group due to the need for special permits and arrangements for transport and accommodation. Independent travel in this region is not typically allowed.
Connectivity is limited in this remote area. You may have access to mobile networks in Dharchula or at lower altitudes, but once you start the trek, you are likely to lose mobile and internet signal for most of the journey.
